gardenia - two questions

The backstory: I impulse bought a beautiful gardenia a few weeks before Easter at the supermarket - glossy healthy leaves, three open flowers, three tight green buds. Pot about 5" X 5".

I watered it regularly - until Mother's Day weekend when I went away and didn't. The blooms were long gone. But then the buds dropped off. It taught me the tag was serious about keeping it moist!

It has continued to flourish in the original pot, has gotten only slightly bigger. There are a few fibrous roots visible at the bottom hole.

First question: should I repot it? one size up? I have an organic all purpose potting soil, AFrican violet potting soil, and cactus potting soil. Which does a gardenia want?

Second question: what is the bloom cycle like? Can I expect to wait a year before it blooms again?
