My advice is keep it well away from the house as mango trees can become very large trees. I have also noticed that many large trees become unproductive and are hard to protect against possums, flying foxes and birds etc.

It's a Haden so yes it does get large.
I am planning on a spot that is about 25" from the house.

I think I need to top it soon.

I just bought a Lemon Meringue Mango and the instuction says not to mix any potting soil, manure, fertilizer with the soil. Bury the root ball the same depth as in the pot. Leave a mound around and fill with water, washing the soil into any empty pockets around the root ball.
Now is the time to fertilize. Recommended fertilizer:12-5-9, with manganese, Iron and zinc. Scatter one level tablespoon per foot of tree height.
Do not count on sprinkler system to do your watering. First month: soak thoroughly twice a week.
2nd and 3rd month: Water once a week. After that water weekly during dry spells.
Fertilize: First 2-3 years, once a month except Nov. through Jan.
