Yes, you can dig the roots but probably not all will be eliminated from the first digging. It will require a follow up in a couple of months. You may want to place a physical barrier both over ground and underground (like a plastick sheet)to control the spreading rhyzomes. This one is a very vigorous plant but I succesfully removed them from an area in my garden by digging them out.
