Is anyone growing Mamey de Santo Domingo (Mammea americana)?
I have been tempted to grow one of these since I have eaten the fruit many times but don't know if it will fruit in Southern California.

From what I've read, some do okay in South Florida, but it is not successful in California. See the article below. It gets too large to grow in a greenhouse:(. Lisa
Here is a link that might be useful: Mamey Apple

I love Mammea americana. The fruit is delicious (a little bit like a sweeter version of the sweet potato). The leaves are also gorgeous. I grow mine in a container and bring it inside in mid autumn. It doesn't drop leaves when brought inside (something that many plants will do.)They like a humid tropical climate, so I don't know how they will do in California. They also grow easily from seed.

I have have seen Mamey sapote in South Florida. It too is a very attractive tree. I believe it will tolerate more coolish/cold temps than Mammea americana. I purchased my Mammea americana from a nursery in Hawaii (Pacific Tropical Gardens). Without a doubt, I have never received a plant that was so thoroughly and beautifully packed. I am on the East Coast and was also very impressed with the speed of processing and delivery of my order. I received a largish plant in superb condition with every leaf in place. South Florida should be mild enough for M. americana and the fruit is delicious. Also propagate readily from large seeds though I don't know if they should be propagated this way if you are growing from fruit.

Just planting a very healthy seed with root, and beginning of tree about to unfold from between seed halves. I grow Thai peppers on my roof in spring summer and fall, and take inside for winter. Will I be able to grow this here? How small- height- can I keep it? How many years to maturity when they fruit? Is there anything published, or member info available, on propagation and growing, and hints about pruning, restricting height, etc? Fruit was delicious. I was told they grow to size of mango trees, but I will have to put outside in spring and take inside in fall. What size manageable pot would I use. Sorry! I'm a beginner with this. Thanks for any help you can offer
