How tall are the plants. What size are the brown spots. Pictures or detail would help.

I remember (very vaguely :) ) reading on one of these posts about papaya plants having different sexes and one of them had spots? Could that be what you are seeing? Sorry I can't find the thread I was thinking about but try searching the Florida or the Tropical Fruit forums. Let us know what it turns out to be!

Thank you for responding. The brown spots do not look like the leaf scars. The plants are about 33" tall. The spots vary between small dots to up to almost an inch. They all give the appearance of running downward or elongated. The bigger ones are at the leaf axis and look like they are dripping downward, but the leaves are still there. I am trying to remember how to post a picture. Will post one as soon as I figure it out. Thank you all.

Hmmm, saw the pics. Almost looks like impact damage but too uniform. Could be a fungus or something like that. Do you give the lost of sun and good air circulation?

I have searched online and can't find anything like the brown spots on my plants. They are in a large pot, recently planted about 3 weeks ago, and get plenty of sun and circulation. Could it be too much water or fertilizer burn of some kind? The plants are extremely healthy and growing like crazy. On the upper, newer green stems, I can see the tiny spots starting to show. I hope it isn't a fungus. There is no soft area or discharge of any kind. Hope I can get to the bottom of this. I have several others in pots and they all look fine, don't want to spead a disease to them if that is what it is.
