Below is an image of an Aralia I purchased today. The vendor did not know it's name and I have searched all over the Internet but cannot locate it. Can anyone identify it please.
The pic exactly matches that in one of my reference books (Ellison's Cultivated Plants of the World") as Polyscias scutellaria cv Pennockii. BUT searching the web under "aralia" & "pennockii" & "balfourii" and variations come up with a baffling number of different descriptions and pictures . So I think my source is NOT reliable in case of cultivars with this species, but may give you a lead. Good luck
Many thanks for your ID. Since posting my enquiry I too have come to the conclusion that it is Polyscias scutellaria cv Pennockii, but I have been unable to find a picture on the web.
Since I am located in Central Florida, I think the following from the Mid-Florida Research & Education Center substantiates the ID
"The leaf size and shape of the Pennock aralia is like the cultivar `Marginata', but the leaflets have an attractive blend of ivory, yellow and dark green patches.
Polyscias tend to be produced predominantly in south Florida due to their slow growth rate and their application in landscaping. The products grown in south Florida nurseries tend to be in the 6 to 14-inch pot, diameter range. In recent years there has been increased interest among central Florida nurserymen to produce polyscias in 4 to 8-inch diameter pots."
It looks to me like a cultivar of the variegated balfouriana or 'polyscias pinnata marginata. The color variation is quite different from the standard balfours, though, so I could be wrong.
