coffee plant stalk turning brown

I have 5 coffee plants that were grown together in a pot that I've separated and repotted. One of them I stuck in a hydroponic setup. The ones in potting soil are doing well though seem to be more fickle and prone to occasional wilting and browning of the leaves.

The one in the hydroponic setup is turning brown from the base of the stalk up. I'm wondering if this is normal. The leaves are green and healthy. New leaf growth is a little slower than the other 4. But this is the only plant where the stalk is browning.

Can anyone advise if this is normal?

how big is the plant?
coffee stems/trunks will eventually turn brown and start to get a bit of a bark to them
