Help with Song of India!

Hi, I have a song of India, pleomele? that I did not put outside this summer, it's in a part of the house is not necessarily air-conditioned all the time, so it's warm. i thought it would like that, but maybe it's too dry. It's lost most of the lower leaves, only tops remain, with some new leaves coming out. But, top leaves are still turning brown and falling off. It has a lower sprout starting that looks good. Should I cut the whole plant off and hope it rejuvinates and sends up new stems, growth from the bottom? I have moved it outside to the heat and humidity, i hope it's not too late.
