Tropical 'bedding' plants

I know I am hankering after my old garden, but I would love to mount an old-fashioned style bedding dispay. I would be very pleased to hear your suggestions. The sort of thing I am looking for, which grow well here, is red Salvia, Tagetes, Calendula, Portulaca, Mesembryanthemum. All small sized, low growing, brilliant flowering varieties. I am experimenting with some dwarf-flowering Cosmos. It will be interesting to see how they turn out. - Ian

Tropical-looking is about foliage, too. Caladiums? What do coleus and Alternanthera do in your area? Sedums? Sorry if I'm suggesting what you consider weeds. Other flowers might be Scabiosa, Dianthus, Centaurea, dwarf zinnias, plumbago, mini or fairy roses, strawflowers, statice...?

It does seem like it would be more interesting perhaps if you used some more vividly colorful plants such as Coleus, Strobilanthes dyeranus, Setcreasia pallida, Begonia 'Escargot', Streptocarpus or bromeliads such as massed Neoregelia 'Fireball' or N. compacta or N. 'Bossa Nova's.
