Rust on Cannas

I have a rust problem on my large potted australian cannas due to all the rain we had during Faye and poor air circulation. I have been taking off the leaves etc but it keeps spreading. I moved the cannas to a better spot and I want to chop it down to get rid of this problem and maybe divide them while I am at it.

My question: Is it too late in the year here to expect them to come back and recover before we have frost here?

I am in a zone 9a.

Nevermind I went ahead and whacked them to the ground, couldn't stand looking at them lol. Hopefully they will come back soon.

Hi;- I don't grow Cannas but have been observing from a distance from the neighbor. That thing has been through a lot, ie, from extreme heat during our hot summer, some times hail during the winter. I have seen it mowed down, whether intentional or accidental is unclear to me. It seems to perk back up in only a few weeks time.

Given the tender loving care you have been giving it I am already crossing my fingers for you!

I always find during late summer they get diseased ratty looking though the worst problem for me is leafrollers. You can whack them down anytime and they will almost immediately regrow. The leaves are not to composted due to spreding diseases.Frost IMO is good for them makes them start over. The only thing I've seen them not tolerate is a hard freeze. Even then I wouldn't bet money they don't come back.lol.
I just recently learned that these are extensively grown in tropical Africa as a food source lol Have never eaten one lol, I assume they eat the corm?? gary

I saw the post on the FL forum about the canna for food..I never knew that either!

I had cut them down the same day of my first post and now they are already coming back and are about 10inches high. No rust whatsoever. I'm trying hard not to get them wet when I water. I have other cannas and I don't seem to get rust on those as bad as the austrailas for some reason.
