The portuguese name Pau Formiga means Antwood, from which we may draw our own conclusions. One of the largest and most spectacular members of the Polygonaceae or Buckwheat family.

Love this tree. The large leaves add to the tropical look. I have several "females" tucked in my back hedgeline--their columnar habit lends well to this. Blooms here in the winter(Nov-Feb). Would probably survive in Zone 9b; may die back but will most likely recover quickly and possibly bloom the same year. Problem is the seem flowers susceptible to cold, drying winds so an early cold snap may cost you your bloom!
