Wish I could help lol. Have been fighting one for many years. Last major pruning was done by hurricane Jeanne.
Completely flattened lol. It recovers very quickly and yet again I missed the oppornity to time how long it took to return to flowering !!!
Mine has never been allowed to produce "trunks" both by me and the storms.lol
Just recently I saw some pix of 50 year old specimens pushing 50 feet!!! I was always under the impression it never got much over 20. mine has never gotten over 20 feet
and clumps not upright growth.
Maybe some smart person will jump in and help us???

I was of the understanding that if you "trimmed" them then, that shoot/plant would not re grow. But other new shoots would. Does yours have younger shoots or plants around its base?

Is there new or newer growth from the bottom of the plant? they are actually clumping plants.
Best thing to do is cut the stalk all the way to the groundand let the newer stalks take over
