Pruning Bougainvillea Stipes

I don't know whether 'stipes' is the correct word or not.

But when a Bougainvillea flowers, there is a small stem that is located just in front of the leaf where the flower occurs at the end of that stem. We'll call it a stipe for the purposes of this post. The equivalent structure for a leaf or cluster of leaves is known as a petiole.

I read somewhere on the web that Bougainvilleas will get bushier if they are pruned and in fact, the article referred specifically to pruning after the flowers fall off. I can only assume that they mean that what I am referring to here as 'stipes' should be pruned.

So I did ...

I am not sure at all how this would enhance bushiness on a Boogie. I have however, noticed that Boogies in nurseries and in the Big Box Garden Centers all have the stipes pruned back.

What's the deal here?

Can anybody clarify 1) that the stipes are what should be pruned and 2) why pruning them would enhance bushiness in a Boogie.

Thanks.
