Garage or basement for my bougainvillia?

I've been reading about overwintering bougainvillia and it seems that my garage will be too cold and my basement will be too warm so I don't know what to do. : ( I'd really like to save it.

Our walkout basement faces the south and stays as warm as the rest of the house even with the heat vents closed so I think that would be too warm, especially if I put it near the south windows where it would get some light.

We keep two liters in our garage and a few times during the winter, they will get slushy but not freeze solid so I know my garage gets below freezing. From what I've read, that would kill a bougainvillia, right? Is it the branches that can't freeze or just the roots? It's in a 3 or 4 gallon foam type container so that would help insulate the roots.

Where do you think it would have the best odds?
