How many do you have? I am going to use a large plastic storage container with a lid this year. When I dig, I remove most of the dirt spraying with hose, cutting stems to a few inches, and cut off most of the roots. I let them dry a bit outside. Store in barely-moist peat or potting soil in the container, with the lid ajar, in your closet. Heck, crumpled newspaper might work. Check on them occasionally to make sure the medium is not bone-dry. You may have to mist the top of the soil or dribble a bit of water on them. No way should they be kept moist. They should start to show growth by March or April. If so, water a bit more, and move to a brighter location. You might be able to see some new root growth thru the sides of the container. That's a cue to water more.

I have about 30 that at this point would fit into a 3 gallon container each if I didn't divide them.

Any ideas for something outside? the fact that I don't have a basement or garage leaves little if any space in closets.

They will only survive in our zones ouside if in the ground and mulched. Some people cover their cannas with a foot of mulch (must be dry) and put a tarp on it, and the cannas do manage to come back next year (once the mulch is removed). Some people even use the frost killed leaves as part of the mulch, but dry leaves, pine needles, or mulch from a garden store will all work well.

So far all the cannas I have in pots have not come back even during the mildest winters, so now I dig them up and store them in a cool closet area. Temps are in the 50s in mid winter there.

If it doesnt work, at least canna bulbs are cheap (but I have learned they are triple the price when you buy them at nursuries as already sprouted plants).
