What can I expect from my Bird of Paradise plants

Posted by va_canuck 8A (My Page) on

I have two Bird of Paradise plants which are beginning to push the limits of what my house can contain. At 9' (pot included - plant is about 7'6) one is now up against the ceiling. I could move it to our foyer which is 18 feet but it gets very little sunlight.

How big do these things need to be before they will flower? Or is flowering indoors unlikely to ever happen?

I was considering moving it to a bright sunny spot outside in the spring, knowing full well it will grow like crazy during the summer and be too big to bring back inside, but maybe it will flower.....

Any help/ideas?

Your description leads me to believe that you're talking about the Giant Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai). These are grown primarily as foliage indoors as they need to be massive before they will bloom. If you want flowers you need to get Strelitzia reginae--but I can never seem to get these into bloom either.

Hi
I grow mine outdoors as yard plants but did you realize there are different cultivars by size as well color??
Obviously for houseplants you'd want to stick to the dwarfs. I suspect they would all require full sun,
Google the family "Strelitzia" not only several species
but different cultivars as well as hybrids.
They commercially produce these for the florist trade so must be a way?? gary
