Do your neighbors think you are a little crazy with tropicals

I live near Virginia Beach (zone 8A), but nevertheless have a 13-foot queen palm, mexican fan palm, pineapples, bananas and a key lime tree all planted in the ground, with varying degrees of winter protection. During the summer the population outside includes papayas etc.

Not that my neighbors complain about the pretty plants but it definitely looks out-of-place in the neighborhood. I joke that I might have the only key lime tree planted in the ground in the entire state of Virginia. They definitely have comments and think I am somewhat an oddball. One thought that our homeowners association would give me trouble for having "inconsistent landscaping".

Does this actually happen to people?
