They go dormant even here in the tropics .

That's Costus Speciosus Variegata and it won't make it in a container in your zone without protection. I grew this costus for years in the ground and it came back with much less vigor every spring until this spring. It just melted away from our wet and very, very cold winter here on the Gulf Coast. I only saw blooms one year which was the first year after planting it. The green variety might make it. The two costus that I grow in the ground that always come back from winter dormancy are Spicatus and Barbatus.
