Take it you don't have the papaya fly there?? They grow very easily here but you get maybe one fruit out of ten. Nothing as wonderful as slicing a fruit open and it's crawling with maggots lol my birds LOVE them though lol gary

Looks ok. paw paws as we call papaya in Australia use to do well in Sydney which is zone 10. They use to say either you got no fruit or enough to feed the street. The one you have illustrated looks like a bisexual paw paw as the fruit are on the ends of long storks. Normally the female plant produces the fruit but needs a male plant nearby. The fruit on a female paw paw is held close to the trunk.

That's a nice looking plant you have! How long did it take for it to get this big? I'm also in So. CAL and growing a few varieties of papayas (Mexican, Hawaiian Solo and Hawaiian Strawberry papayas) that I grew from seeds. Some are about 2 to 3' tall. I hope they turn out better than your other ones. :)

Now that is an odd looking papaya. I never saw anything like that- male and female on the same tree and how they hang down like that. I hope it tastes good. If it does, I would like some seeds, please.

I agree how some papaya are delicious, but some are just blah or worse. Kind of a kick in the teeth after waiting patiently for the fruit to ripen!

That is a nice looking papaya. My dh bought one in a pot that had 2 babies with it. I dont know what kind it is. I am thinking maybe one of the Mexican types? It has male and female plants. The tallest one I think is a male because it kept dropping all the fruit but then finally one stayed. The second tallest is prob female it has several fruit and they are shaped differently than the male(?) one. I dont really think they will make it before it freezes. I am wondering if the fruit will ripen if I pick it early? Here are some photos.

Huge plant..grew this way in one season!

Here they are earlier this spring b4 I put them in the ground.

I got some red lady, red maradol, and solo growing for next year so maybe I will actually get more fruit and can overwinter them next year.
