coffee grounds in the garden

I work part time in a busy coffee house and up until recently we had been just throwing our used grounds out in the general rubbish. I read somewhere that the grounds are good for improving the soil contition so I have since started to bring them home at the end of the day and spreading them around the root zone of the trees in the garden, mostly things like gardenias and majestic plams which seem to struggle in our poor sandy soil. I get around 10kg of grounds three times a week.

Does anyone know if this is a good thing or will it harm the plants? Is any organic matter good organic matter? The soil here is basically beach sand.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Adam
