Yucca

Hi - question about Yuccas. I inherited dozens of Yuccas - they must be pretty old because they're so established they're even sprouting new plants almost on top of the old. I've seen some amazing containers using Yucca as the central plant and I wanted to try. But when I went to dig one up, I didn't know quite how. The root/stem doesn't have an end, it is about 2-4" diameter and very fibrous, connecting one yucca to another. I went ahead and used the shovel to cut into the stem/root but am afraid I injured it because it seems not to be thriving. Admittedly, it's not in full sun, like it was in its previous home. I'll go ahead and move it. Anyway, my main question is what is the best way to transplant a plant like this that doesn't have a tidy little root ball? How much root should I leave per plant?

THanks for any input.
