Bangkok lemon is very good firm variety. Excalibur should be releasing two new firm varieties this year, the Excalibur Gold and the Excalibur Red jackfruit. If you wanted something different you could wait on either of those two.

And how about a smaller, manageable tree? I, too, am in the market for a jackfruit tree.

From what I've seen and have been told, the Excalibur Gold looks as though it will be a smaller tree with smaller fruit(under 10lbs? maybe). That would be great for homeowners who can't manage a huge jackfruit tree with 50lb fruit. I've seen some of the bangkok lemon fruit get to 50lbs+.

I planted a "Lara Farms" Jack last spring. According to Julian Lara it was a Gold Nugget seedling, with excellent and smaller size fruit. It was grafted, and has been very compact and slow growing for a Jackfruit tree.

Hopefully it turns out to be a keeper. At it's current growth rate, it will be a few years before it produces..

Sheehan, does Excalibur still graft the Bangkok Lemons? When I got mine a few years back he told me I got one of the last grafted ones.

I just called Excalibur and they said their jackfruit were grafts. And I specifically asked about the Bangkok Lemon.

I have a feeling that the golden nugget (and its progeny) may be precocious. My 2 year old golden nugget started producing flowers near the trunk this month, which probably means that I'll see fruit next season (2013). I have a theory that the smaller fruited cultivars may be more precocious.

Yup the bangkok lemons at Excalibur are grafted once again. Not all though. Some of the jackfruits are not grafted so make sure to verify that it is grafted before buying. There was a period of time where the jackfruits were being grown from seed.
