Nope, not a Burr Oak, or any other oak I think. Burr Oaks really don't grow in S. California, anyway. The previous owners wouldn't have planted an oak tree in this area. It is mostly tropicals down in this part of my yard. Burr Oaks have a very prominent end lob. My leaf doesn't. Not the same leaf, unfortunately. Really stumped by this plant. I'm going to try to upload on the Arbor Day Forum as soon as my membership is approved, and maybe try to send a photo to my local tree nursery. I am so stumped!

Hi Hoosierquilt, it may be one of our trees that has migrated over to you. It looks alot like a Stenocarpus sinautus, one of the most spectacular flowering trees in Oz.

You're absolutely correct, Bruce :-) One of the list members over on the California Gardening Forum recognized it, and my local tree nursery did confirm it. And, I'm just thrilled!! This is one really gorgeous tree. I should have figured this came from Australia, since the leaf was so unusual. I am hoping I can transplant it in a to a sunnier location, so it blooms - the whole point in having this lovely tree. I have a sunnier spot against the fence, and my neighbors would really enjoy this tree, too. Do you know how it tolerates being transplanted? You can see that it is stretching and reaching for the sun. It is about 10 feet tall, but kind of skinny and growing straight up. I would just hate to lose it in the transplant process, as it isn't the fastest growing specimen.
