avocado bloomed itself to death...I think...

I have an avocado that I planted about 5 years ago. It grew very well in my yard. I pulled tons of fruit off it the first year, let a couple develop the second year, and it was loaded with fruit the 3rd year and I let them stay on the tree. It subsequently died, almost. It was about 8 feet tall and now is about 2.5 feet tall. Most of the trunk is dead down to the ground, except for about 1/3 around, the cambium layer has survived and is pushing out new growth, and believe it or not, it's blooming. I keep wanting to pull it out, but I hate to do that when something is trying so hard to survive. What will happen to this tree if I leave it? Will it eventually die anyway? I know I should remove all forming fruit, but should I keep the tree?

Just want to let you all know you have been a great help to me. I read often, but don't post often. I have used many of your ideas and am very grateful that people are so willing to take the time to help others.
