You can grow any type offered by your local nursery. They buy on what they KNOW will do best since anything fussy they don't want dieing before its sold or even looking bad.
That being said..the most common in California is Manila. Others are Glenn and..well.in soucal a whole lot more.
Try any of them. FULL SUN is required. Lots of summer watering. And as you might have read..fertilizers do a plant a world of good. They can snap them out of a funk.

Any favorite for flavor? There are an overwhelming number of varieties, and without the chance to taste them, it's hard to narrow the field.

Coconut Cream, Lemon Zest and Bailey's Marvel are 3 great flavored Mango cultivars.

I haven't heard of those, but they certainly sound tasty :)

Now I just have to see if I can find any of them...

I just went to Spyke's nursery in Davie and they have some great new cultivars. I saw, "Ugly Betty," "peach cobler," and many more new varieties. These have all been selected for their ability to produce and resist disease.
