Mystery fruit from Costa Rica

About 20 years ago (when I was a kid) I went to Malpais on the end of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. A guy working at one of the restaurants there gave me some fruit which he said he had picked way out in the forest. I don't have a clear memory of what it was but I'm hoping maybe someone has an idea.

I think it was small (golf ball-sized) and roundish. The coloring was yellow to orange and internally it was similar to a passion fruit with small individual cells of fruit each containing a small seed. I seem to remember it being tart.

Does this sound even mildly familiar to anyone? I may totally be mis-remembering it...

Thanks!
Ryan
