My mango articles on wikipedia

squam256

So since we already have a bunch of mango posts here....I figure I'd add one more! :)

Over the past few years I have been slowly working on writing articles for wikipedia on the named mango cultivars. At this point I have written an article on just about every Florida cultivar and a few that originated outside the US. These articles contain historical info along with descriptions.

These have and are still a work in progress. Some of the older articles pale in quality when compared to the newer ones I've written and so they lack uniformity and I am still working on updating them. I have been aided by Asit Ghosh of the Brevard RFVC who has supplied many of his mango photos that he's taken over the years to the wiki database and many of which I've included in the articles.

It should also be noted that I did not write every single one of these, though I did write most of them.

Please check them out and let me know what you think and how you think they can be improved on. There are still a number of major varieties that don't have articles yet (such as Nam Doc Mai)along with others that have incomplete articles and some of you may even want to contribute yourselves (just make sure you can supply proper references if you create or edit).

So here is the link to the template:

    Hi squam256!
It's nice to get in touch with you. I have have been translating mango articles in wikipedia from english to italian since last few months, because here mangoes aren't well known and i wanted to help to raise the italian interes in this crop.
Till now i have completed Kensington Pride, Glenn, Tommy Atkins, Keitt, Van Dyke and Kent. Those are the one that are grown in some orchards in italy, as experiments. Today i wanted to translate the Haden entry, because it gets a lot of links, but since i read here that you are updating them i dunno if i'll do that. I don't want to spend time on outdated pages. :)
I found many of them very informative and useful. I'd like to see the some more update to tommy atkins entry, since it is so widely cultivated, and for many people living in not tropical climates is one of the mangos wich will be more probably encountered.
Later I'll translate some "condo mango" cultivar, wich can be raised with success even in northern italy.
I also think that "list of mango cultivar" page need some clean up as soon as possible... i have tried to do some work in the translated italian version of it, but i lack of references. A page listing as much cultivar as possible would be awesome! It could be a great starting point for any research.
Thank you for your great job!

Pancrazio, of that list I actually did not write the Tommy Atkins article, though I agree it needs improvements.

The Haden article was one of the first I wrote and is due for a very major update.

A big THANK YOU squam for your efforts to educate all people regarding mangos. I have purused this list before, but notice it is lacking in quite a few cultivars, mostly the ones popularly grown in the U.S.
I have a variety I'm growing which I don't think anyone else has right now - Timotayo, developed by a gentleman in So. California, but don't know exactly how to get that on Wikipedia - I only have an article written by a nursery referencing the grower who developed it - would you like me to send you that article?

I think it's great what you're doing. I truly believe with the condo mangos, anyone anywhere (or almost) can grow and fruit mangos - that would be cool to eventually have on Wikipedia the cultivation specs for those indoor/outdoor mangos.

Many people have their favorite indoor tropicals (palms, corn plants, Schefleras, etc)which they grow in their living rooms, sun rooms, etc. and once mangos in pots starts to gain popularity, there is no reason many of those same households can't move their plants outside to their patios in the spring summer and fall and be grabbed by the magic that happens come ripening time....

and once they taste the fruit.....they'll be hooked!

Well....call it a silly movement.....but I'd love to see mangos, lots of varieties, sold in every nursery, everywhere, with instructions on culture and soil type, fertilization, etc. and which would come from the expertise of quite a few here that are learning from scratch what works and doesn't work....

Ok....I've just been shooed off the Oscar stage by someone that says the show must go on....

MangoDog, I have now added Timotayo to the template. If you click on the name it opens a new page where a new article can be written.

I'm going to add more names to the template. The 'List of mango cultivars' page has a number of varieties listed under the Florida section that I haven't added to the template yet.

    squam256,
wich cultivars have been updated more recently? So i'll concentrate the tradution efforts on that ones.
I can't emphasize enough how much your work is important for not english speakers, since it can give a realiable starting point for many not english wikipedias.

Pancrazio, currently most of the updating I've been doing is reference based and the edits have been relatively minor. Some articles that I don't anticipate changing much include Bailey's Marvel, Carrie, Duncan, Florigon, Hatcher, Julie, Mulgoba, Zill.

Some articles that you definitely should probably wait on translating are Haden, Kent, Keitt, Springfels, Dot, and Edward.

Articles like Aamras, Alampur Baneshan, Alphonso, Ataulfo, Bennet Alphonso, Brahm Kai Meu, Chaunsa, Chok anan, Dasheri, Langra, Sammar Bahisht, and Shan-e-cuda were not written by me and probably won't get updated for a long time....so I would avoid those.

Thanks great information. one thing I found interesting going over the listings, was how Haden is often one of the parents in many popular mango varieties, I guess you could say he is the Grandaddy of mangoes.

Since this was posted I've also branched out to writing about avocado cultivars as well. You can find some of them linked on the main article for avocado.

I would like to do some articles on the new Zill releases, but unfortunately I have to have a published source to use as a reference for any articles written. I can't even do an article for Pickering because there aren't any published references to it that I've been able to find......and that one has existed for about 10 years already I think. If anyone can find anything published about any of these I'd appreciate it.

tropicdude, that would be an apt description for Haden. Amazingly the original Haden tree is still alive and regularly producing in Coconut Grove. Its 109 years old this year. Speaks to the kind of longevity mango trees can have.

Nice articles. Since they have a historical focus my suggestion might not be appropriate. But.
I would find it handy to have a source that gave specific instructions for each mango cultivar as to:
    When to pick;
    When to eat.
With some varieties it doesn't matter much whether they ripen on the tree or not. For others it matters a lot.
For example, I've picked a couple dozen Lancetillas, but never at the right time apparently.
And I remember hearing about one large variety from Pine Island that only tasted good if allowed to lie in the sun for a few days after picking.
Fairchild mentions this for a few varieties, but not consistently.
