Naked Guava

I have a small guava that's about 5' tall and just FULL of blooms. It's looking great except... the west side of the tree has no bark left, and it's green where the bark was.

Is this sunburn or something normal for Guava? If it is abnormal what do I do? Whitewash it? How to make whitewash because the two big stores I went to look at me like I'm crazy asking for whitewash.

The peeling of bark on guavas is normal. Jaboticaba does the same thing.
