That's an ingenius idea and also a very economical and space saving way to grow strawberries, those terra cotta pots with the holes with the lips, cost an arm an a leg. Thank you for sharing.

Nice. I've seen similar in catalogs and elsewhere on the WWW, but I've read that you need to use much larger pipe (like 8"). Obviously you saw something smaller that was working well. How long is the 4" pipe you are using and can you tell me a little more about the fittings at the bottom (where the threaded piece is)?

at home depot, the 4" inch pipe comes in 10 foot length, its about $20. hack saw it in half and drill the 2" holes using a hole bit, 4 on two sides (going right through) and three alternating on the other two sides like in the picture

all the fittings you will see where the pvc pipe is, the male and female ends are about $5, I glued the male end on to the pipe and concreted the female end into a 10 gallon container, they can go right in the ground or in a bucket too.

altogether two probably cost me $50

nice idea bryan - like steve says, I would have thought a larger diameter would be advantageous so I want to see how you do with strawberries and/or tomatoes.

How will you keep them upright on a real windy day????

not really. its not my design, its one thats been implemented before. pvc is used for drinking water. its also used for sewage so it should be resistant to any soil or biological breakdown, for whatever thats worth.

pvc coated wire, if catches fire, creates noxious fumes, is that what you mean?

No, I've been interested in PVC growing...I just had a slight concern that a plant would absorb at least some of the bad mojo from the PVC.

Any chance of an update on the planters?
