New Potted Mango's!

Hey guys,

I got some new additions to my collection

I decided to pot them all because i was running out of room in my yard and easier to move in during winter.

The First is my new Pickering from Mickey at plantogram:

Also found this Timotayo at Lowes for $39 (its an upper V graft with only 2 growth shoots)

And I found this Gold Nugget at Lowes for only $20 bucks (price mistake) its again an upper V graft (thanks a lot la verne!) with only 1 growth shoot

Here is the free Barbados Cherry from Mickey

Pic of all my potted plants(from left to right: struggling minnola tangelo i pulled from the ground and potted up, ex bonsai'd jaboticaba [i decided I want to actually taste the fruit sooner than later], timotayo mango, gold nugget mango, pickering mango, barbados cherry, 2 tiny grafted citrus in the smaller tan pots, and some herbs in the white long container)

do you guys think these pots are big enough? the 2 larger tan pots are 24 inch glazed plastic (resin?) from walmart which say they are UV resistant, the other 2 are 22 inch high density resin double walled planters from costco.. I figured they should hold up during the phoenix summers well enough if placed toward the east side of my house giving shade in the afternoon.. i was thinking the costco plantes might be too small though? what do you all think?

i planted everything in a mix of: peat, perlite, volcanic pumice, compost soil, play sand, decomposed granite sand, and a cup of gypsum per planter

was I supposed to use gravel as a bottom layer of each pot?

after I had everything planted I thought of this idea which sounds like it might improve drainage?

but i don't want to aggravate the roots by taking everything out to add the gravel.. is it beneficial enough to attempt though?

I definitely think your pots are big enough. They may be too big depending on what type of potting mix you used. Gravel in the bottom of pots does not improve drainage so you should be fine there.

Mullsie - your new plants look fine - good luck with the potting....I might make a suggestion though...to keep the roots in the pots from frying, might you consider burying the potted plants? That will keep the roots as cool as they would be if in the ground. You can still pull them out come winter time....

Our summers are just too torch-like, I think, not to give the roots a break....just an idea

Looks good, just keep an eye for those containers drying out. I know from experience, a 10 gal container can dry out in a matter of hours with temps above 100.

Mull, how the root look like on your timatayo mango from lowes and Pickering from POG? I get the same timotayo from lowes and also ordered nam doc Mai from POG(will arrive this Friday), I plan to keep the one from lowes in original pot for another year but not sure the one from POG. I've read that plant from POG trend to get rootboud and should repotted to bigger pot right away.

yeah James, the POG mangos are in shorter 3gal pots.. so their root structure is definately more dense..

both of the trees from La Verne (timotayo and gold nugget) are potted in taller 3gal pots, but they put them so low and fill with soil way too high.. i would try and repot your timotayo if you didnt want to plant it right away.. put it in a slightly larger pot and plant it higher up so the feeder roots are closer to the soil line..

i dont understand why they plant them so low

Congrats! All the trees look great in their new pots. You did great! Good luck with them! It will definitely be a lot easier to haul them in the garage than cover/heat/protect in the winter!
