| Living in the heat of the Middle East in Dubai, I have a Keitt mango tree with 6, yes count em 6 mangoes on it. It started out pretty good but dropped a ton of fruit. There's lots of good info on these forums about Keitt, but what I can't seem to find is any info on when to actually pick the fruit.
They are all quite green still, but from what I can gather they won't actually change color that much. Am I looking for a change in color, or something else to tell me when it is time to pick them? Thanks for the help. |

| Wow - Popester - what was THAT! Nafees went a little NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, back to the topic at hand. My Keitt never got soft on the tree or changed color. They stayed hard a long time and never softened till I picked them. Makes for a long season. Just make sure they are full sized and they should ripen in about 2 weeks or so once picked..... That was my experience anyway....last year... MDog |
| Ha, interesting way to try and drum up business for a nursery in India. Glad someone looked past all that to answer. Thanks MDog, I suppose it's still early in the season so will leave them a little longer. They do appear to have stopped growing larger, but I suppose it's not hurting them to stay were they are for now. |

| Popesterb, I found this video that might help. I'm also for the very first time getting fruits on my Keitt Mango tree...but here in FL our season is late August through early Oct. so I have a ways to go myself. Thanks Mangodog for that useful info as well... |

| You are welcome Pugles, as always, and Popester - give me some temps in the different seasons where you live. It is a desert, correct? What are your average highs and lows in Dubai in the summer and winter....just curious how it compares to mine... gary |
| Yes, thanks Gary. I've been off-site for a while, managed to harvest all 6 mangoes, man were they awesome! Here in Dubai it is mainly desert, although we are near the coast so it does get quite humid. Summer temps reach highs of 48C with lows of 32C. Winter time lows can get as low as 12C at night with daytime highs usually in mid 20sC. Another question about this mango tree. I've attached a photo of the graft, the original grafted tree is the closest one, centered in the photo. All the other branches have grown since the tree was planted. Only the original grafted branch flowered and fruited and I was wondering if this is normal. I think I read somewhere that branches that grow below the graft will never fruit, any truth to this? If so, should I prune any growth below the graft? Thanks again! Bruce |
| Yeah, Bruce they are a mighty tasty mango, aren't they? I know some of the Floridians don't think they are anything special, but I just loved mine! As far as branches below the grafted branch not fruiting and flowering, I don't think there is any correlation. Those lower branches are simply the "tree" of the root stock and should behave like any mango tree/branch. But, I will admit, for such a large branch it is a bit unusual that it hasn't produced any fruit yet.... How big is the tree now? Looks like it's at least 8-10 feet high.... I'm also wondering if you shouldn't chop off those NON-grafted branches so the Keitt can really take off - any particual reason you're keeping them on? Gary |
| Good guess, it's right around 8 feet high, although here's the odd part, the original grafted branch hasn't grown any taller since it was planted, and only sits around 5 feet high. The height of the tree all comes from those other branches (5 in total) that you see in the picture. They are taller and thicker than the original, but it is the original that is providing the fruit. I should note there are branches coming off the graft, but it just doesn't seem to want to grow any thicker or taller. The original graft also looks like crap as it's all hunched over due to the weight of the fruit. But I don't really care what it looks like if it keeps up with the tasty fruit production! As for reasons for keeping the non-grafted branches, none whatsoever. I thought maybe they would fruit, but when they did not, I thought maybe something was up and I decided to try this forum for info. Do you think I should cut the tree back to just the original graft?
