My experience has been that most of them have no problem setting fruit when seed grown and some will do so while still at a young age.

The smaller types - like strawberry guava, have a flavor that I got used to after munching on them while working in the yard. Like you I am no big fan of fresh guava or guava juice but the little round red strawberry guavas become addictive over time even though they are grainy and very guava-ey in flavor. Though the larger ones are picked from trees in the tropics I have had them set fruit while just a two year old sappling in a pot.

I also got my first exposure to guava paste while visiting Puerto Rico, only it was the white soda bread with string cheese and jelly made by reconstituting guava paste.

I love the taste of strawberry guava, its a sweet tangy very agreeable taste. I actually just purchased a second strawberry lemon guava tree. The great thing about the yellow strawberry guava is it bears heavily in a container all year round, I don't believe the regular red variety bears all year round though.
