Mystery Mango .. Who can ID ?

sleep

Last year, a friend of mine brought some mangoes to work for me to sample. The mangoes were large, red and green, with zero yellowing even when ripe. I was very surprised at the flavor, and I would rate it as very good. Very Juicy, almost no fiber, and a nice sweet flavor.

I looked around at various pics of mangoes on the internet, trying to ID this thing ... I never figured it out.

My friend described the tree as very large, and being planted very close to a Brackish waterway in Ft Lauderdale.

On Saturday, he invited me over to check it out. He is a renter, and moving from the property in about 10 days. From his description, the mangoes might not yet be ready, but I figured I would stop by, pick a few and see what happens.

WOW ! I almost could not believe my eyes when I saw this monster. 40 ft tall, and production like I have never seen ..

I picked about 15 of the largest ones. I really hope they ripen up..

Here are two pictures, one pic from each side of the Mystery Mango..

Any ideas?

I wish I knew... but just wanted to say that is one BEAUTIFUL Huge Mango tree! Wow, look at all those mangoes. I would have picked a huge bag...it looks like you can ripen those at home. Enjoy them!

    looks like Kent?

theres a larger one down the road from me, has to be 60 feet because it towers over the phone poles. when its in full bloom the tree canopy is so loaded it looks pink and yellow from the bracts and not green. from my friends balcony in Young Circle, Downtown Hollywood I can probably point out 6 specimens almost as large, theyre around if you look up.

100% sure it's not a Kent. Taste and texture is quite different. There is more red colororing, and never any yellow color, even at full ripeness. Shape is also different....

So far my best guess is Parvin, or an un-named seedling..

they look like a Kent to me, the size, color, lenticels, shape are right if it ripens in a month or so then probably.

haden gets a lot of yellow to it so that is doubtful and keitt is a late season so I don't think they would be that red yet.

You can't tell if it has a graft line? If it's a seedling you may as well graft a couple of those puppies before renter friend moves out.

Unfortunately, without seeing the inside of the fruit, checking its texture, skin adherence, fragrance, this is a tough call as many mangoes look similr to this. There are many mangoes that this is not. I would definitely bet against Kent for the reasons that Sleep mentions. Parvin is a reasonable guess. I have had a couple of Parvins drop so far this year but they were immature. If you want to bring one by to evaluate it against my Parvin, it might make the ID easier.

    Sounds good Harry :)

Hopefully the largest of the ones I picked will start to ripen up. I'll bring a couple by later this week or next ..

Parvin is infamous for producing lots of small seedless fruit that are called "nubbins".

Shape is somewhat similar to Glenn but the fruit appears too large and colorful, not to mention the tree size.

Actually, some of the fruit in the pictures of the tree canopy appears to have the globular shape of Haden. More pics of the fruit might help. Sometimes Haden fruit comes out somewhat enlongated even though its typically rounder. The red color and prominent lenticel dots are Haden-esque as well. Could also be a Haden seedling.

Haden is not as oblong as these fruits. I agree with Squam. It looks a bit like Glenn, but seems a bit too colorful and the glenn trees aren't suppose to get huge, unless it might be an old tree.

Honestly, the more I look at the canopy the more I think it looks like Haden. Most of the giant old trees I see like this in south Florida are old Hadens.

Got any more pics of the fruit sleep?

OK, so I can say with 100% certainty that it is not a Kent, Keitt, Haden, or Glenn.

Irwin seems a possibility, although the Mystery Mango has no yellow skin, even on extreme ripeness. the photo's I have seen of Irwin have some yellowing when ripe. Also, Irwin in described as growing in clusters, the MM did not seem to be fruiting in that manner...

Parvin and Irwin seem the best possibilities thus far, but maybe it really is a seedling. Wouldn't that be cool :)

Pic of a different MM specimen next to an unripe Glenn

Sorry for the upside down pic :(

Definitely not a Glenn. It is larger. Looks like a Kensignton, Kent or Van Dyke. Or maybe a seedling?? :)

Here's my haden. When it's completely ripe, it's a combo of vibrant red with deep yellow.

Thanks Marinfla :) I also really like the complexity in my countertop.

Unfortunately it seems as though the mango's I picked were too early. Zero ripening thus far. I plan on taking one last shot at getting some good specimens and possibly some budwood next Wednesday....

How much is the renter asking per month? For the right price I think I could move there...

No idea on the type, wish I did, sorry.

I would ask his renter if you can negotiate a deal to pick the mango's upon them getting ripe. Tell him it'll help keep the yard cleaner? Worth a shot!

I really hope those mangoes on that tree don't go to waste. There is a lot of money hanging in those branches@!

Looks like an "Irwin" to me. Tall trees, heavy crop and very red.
