Planting mango trees in red clay soil

Hi,

I live in Lakeland, FL (Central Florida). Soil here is clay type of soil with reddish and yellowish tones. I have also felt the soil is harder to dig using a shovel.

Wondering what the best strategy is to plant Mango trees in this soil. Here are few options based on some preliminary reading up I had done in these forums:

Option 1: To dig out about 2x-3x width of the pot and 2-3 feet deeper than the root ball. Mix 1 part of compost, 1 part of native clay soil, and 1 part of Top Soil and plant the tree.

Option 2: To just dig out the size of root ball, add compost, and plant the tree without too much additional rich soil. From what I hear, it seems the more you let the tree adapt to the native soil, the better it is. No idea why though. So I am bit hesitant going this route as I might kill expensive tree if I am not right. :-)

Any pointers or advice to get these trees going will be greatly helpful. Thanks in advance.
