Avocado Pruning Question

I have a couple of Avocado trees. One is in the ground now. It was Haas, I think. The other I don't know its name. It was purchased from a vegetable stand on the street. The vendor said it was cultivated a lot in Mexico .. so I don't know its name. Anyway, I'd like to know if Avocado trees can pruned just like mango.

The Haas Avocado looks bushy. The other unknown variety only has a straight stem and there's a little growth coming off from the tip and the growth rate is very slow. That's why I'm wondering if I should cut the tip off to promote faster growth. Any idea what should be done?

All I can tell you banana fan is that my two avocado trees grew fairly slowly the first couple of years, then took off. I think they like to establish a strong root system first before shooting up. My trees are both Mexican varieties.
