Banana leaves are going have issues with the hot dry summer. They will crisp up fast and dry out without some filtered sun and or misters.

Surinam cherry seems like it would take the hot dry climate much better, optimally under filtered sun.

I kinda like some surinam cherries, but many I tried had a rather odd taste of a fuel like kerosene? I have four right now, supposedly a "cultivar" that has really sweet black fruit and they are in partial shade (in pots) and doing really well growing fast.

Where I work (Dania beach in southeast Florida) MANY businesses and homes have surinam cherry bushes in full sun but most are thin and weed like, all have fruit. I walk a lot and sample the fruit of all of them and the best tasting seem to be well cared for, trimmed and watered with sprinklers at minimum. I haven't noticed any that were cared for in full sun that didn't look healthy.

I don't think it gets as hot for the bushes here as it does there but I think it's worth a try.

Surinam cherry can easily grow as a tree like bush with a 3" diameter trunk. I have seen scraggly Surinam cherry hedges and lush ones. I think mulch and organic matter help a lot. Once you get one going you can plant the seeds and get a hedge going
