Carambola Arrrggghhh..

I don't understand it, and probably never will. Today at Lowes I saw a little Fwang Tung stick 4' tall and not a half inch in trunk girth with the entire tree covered with flowers and little fruits. HOW do the nurseries get twigs to flower so early?
I have three Carambola trees two in the ground 2+ years, the other over a year. The first two are well into the 15' height range with sturdy 3"+ trunks and no flowers.
I bought them all as little sticks AND root bound in 3 gallon pots with flowers and little fruits all over them in may and early June.
After that first early crop the trees only flowered in late August.
I've been told to try 0-0-50 but no can do, nobody has it.
So, HOW do they do it?
