guava - bark peeling off? Normal?

I have a guava tree.
This is the second year since i put it in the ground.
It has hundreds of little fruit, last year was nothing.

A LOT of the bark near the base of the tree is just "peeling off"
Is this normal ?
The tree seems healthy otherwise.

From the Charles Boning book, "Florida's Best Fruiting Plants", for guava
"the reddish-brown bark is smooth and patchy, flaking off to reveal white, green and tan under layers"

I have a strawberry guava and yes, it sheds bark quite regularly as the trunk and branches get bigger.
