Those look like flowers. It's too early to say if it's female or hermaphrodite.

I've noticed on mine that when there is a bulbous swelling attached to the base of the flower, it will become a little papaya.....

personal experience is that if the plant sends out a long tendril its flowers are usually male, with a few hermaphrodite flowers. if its a single flower straight out of the trunk its female.
