Manila is seedling, upright grower.. Taste similar to the atulfo you see at grocery stores, will take longer to fruit since it's seedling.

You talking bout the ones at lowes? They are generally 3.5gallon containers and 20 bucks.. Good for the price, I ought one to practice grafting

I have 4 Manilas in 25 gallon pots that are 10-12 foot tall with 25 fruits on average per tree. I bought them from the tropical fruit tree guy in north Phoenix. I like the manilas cuz they grow fast and fruited about year 4.

I bought my Manila from Lowes (for $20) and yes it does well in a pot. It's the first mango tree I've ever bought and I was impressed at how resilient it was to all the newbie abuse I subjected it too. I "pugged" it in half and it has since put out two flushes of growth (more if it weren't for bad spider mite infestations).

Thanks guys, the one I was looking at was definitely more than 3 gallons, and was about 5' tall. Is this tree better than Nam Doc Mai? How long until this tree would produce fruit?

Yes, I am growing one in a container atm. No fruit yet, still a few years away.

So far it seems like an upright grower. Not sure how tall it will be. I would say Manila is a moderately vigorous grower.

- What is so special about it?

Its adaptability to Southern California's climate, cold hardiness is reported to be pretty good. The fruit has a great unique taste as well.

No one can tell you how long it will take to fruit. No, IMO it is not nearly as good as Nam doc Mai.

My manila, MGB, is about 8 years old and yes it is upright, but also kind of has hanging, droppy limbs so not sure how to answer that one. It's planted in the ground and now about 15 feet high by 12 feet wide I'd say.....I got my 3.5 gallon for 20 bucks at lowes and it took about hmmmmmm, 3-4 years to start to fruit...
