I'd just leave it in their doggylips. Where do you live?
If it's a wet and humid climate just make sure the soil dries out a bit between waterings. That would be the only danger of a larger pot (in my humble opinion) - the root ball might stay too soggy if not monitored somewhat....

Yeah, that's the other thing - HAVE WELL DRAINING SOIL!

it'll be fine. when i bought my 3 mangos last spring, they were in 5gal nursery pots, about 10" diameter. i up potted them into 10gal nursery pots, about 15" diameter. they've been doing great in full sun, with regular watering and some mulch on top to keep them from drying out.

As far as soil goes, I use my generic secret recipe soil. It seems to work well on everything from asparagus to raspberries. Probably not the optimal, but it seems to drain well; 1/3 garden soil, 1/3 sand, 1/6 peat, 1/6 manure, and a couple handfuls of perlite and vermiculite.
I didn't discover the forum until after I decided on the cultivar. I think I would have gone for a pickering, oh well. I've been wanting a sweetheart lychee too, I guess I should save on shipping. Is excessive tropicals grounds for divorce?

I would just use the 14" pot and call it a day. Mangos are quite tolerant of suboptimal soil conditions and being in a pot is just one more of those conditions.
Personally, I up-pot my trees only when they suck their pot dry in 72 hours or less (in the middle of summer). I've found that if the tree completely drys the pot in 72 hours, the pot is probably mostly filled with roots (but not root bound), at this time, I double the volume of the pot.
Drying the pot completely in 72 hours during the summer translates to about a week during the winter, so you don't want to up-pot late in the summer, because then your soil will remain wet for an unpredictable amount of time once the winter hits.
