Dragon Fruit Cutting Question

I just had a question on cuttings. I planted a whole bunch of cuttings this year that I got in trade for my epicactus cuttings.

All of them except for the white jania took root (I think it might have been too corked to survive) of those almost all of them were producing new growth right off the bat.

One cultivar (I forgot the name) had a super thin cutting and it rooted fine but no growth. Then I realized it was upside down so I cut it in half (it was really long) and planted the other one right side up. Within 2 days of doing this the rooted half started putting out new growth.

Was the sheer length retarding the growth since it had to build a root structure up to support it?
