I'm building a planter box (4'x4'x18") for a Brasilian banana plant I have. Because I live on a gopher hill I have to put hardware cloth screening in the bottom of the box. I'd like to know if banana roots will spread out horizontally to the edges of the box and then circle, or will they mostly head downwards to a certain depth? The hardware cloth screen has 1/2" holes and I'm opening some of them up to 1" and I'm trying to figure out if this will be a problem for the banana roots.
