What's the name of this fruit?

A friend is going away on a fruit/seed collecting trip, and he'll be on the lookout for this one. I don't know the English & scientific name. Here is the description from my memory of having eaten them years ago in Vietnam:

Size: about a small table grape, not the large "globe" grape.

Exterior color: black or dark brown

Exterior texture: velvet, yes, feels and looks like velvet.

Hardness: the shell is brittle, you just use finger pressure to crush it, as you would with tamarind.

Seed: probably a single seed IIRC.

The edible part is the pulp inside the shell, it tastes kinda like tamarind.

Thanks,
