Anybody here using the 'gritty mix' for their container trees?

I read lots of posts about this gritty mix, many people have success with it, a few failed, myself included. Granted, I've only done one, and it was total failure, I'm nervous about killing another one of my tropical fruit trees. I'm pretty sure that it was my technique. It was a wax jambu, healthy, lots of leaves, even a few small flowers. I rinsed off the soil around the root ball, must've broken lots of the small feeder roots in the process. Put it in the gritty mix, watered diligently to keep the soil moist. Over the next few weeks, all leaves were lost, branches dried up, and I threw the plant away last week. If you use the gritty mix with your tropical fruit trees, please share your transplanting technique.

Thanks,
