Ripening mangoes in India

Very interesting video on ripening mangoes in India. Do mangoes give off heat

as they ripen? I would guess so. The scheme here is to trap the heat in the box.

This could be duplicated here by getting a cardboard box or insulated ice chest.

Put mangoes on the bottom and put old blankets on to top. Then put in room that

is not air-conditioned. I just did this with some Keitts as an experiment

Welcome back to my ongoing series on mango farming at Durga Farms near Pune, India. In this video, I show how we go about ripening mangoes using natural methods without any chemicals.

Please vist my blog at: http://aquacultureadventures.stochaster.com/mango-farming

We have been growing mangoes for over 10 years and are big believers in organic farming. In order to get a great price, farmers pluck their mangoes early in the growth cycle and ripen them using chemicals. This gives them a first comer advantage in the market and get a better selling price. I am a big believer in organic farming and our mangoes are grown using organic farming methods. Furthermore, we do not use any chemicals and believe me, the mangoes taste way way better. Anyways, I thought I would share how we ripen them using hay and dried rice stalks. Using rice stalks and hay maintains excellent heat in the boxes and the mangoes ripen over a period of 1-2 weeks.
