Unknown edible root..

My wife was given some Ginger root looking plant a few months ago. I planted one of the pieces thinking it might a Ginger or maybe some kind of Aroid. Instead,its this generic looking plant. A few thin,weak,hairy stems. Leaves about 3"long. The camera made them seem bigger then they are.
So,a tuber that looks like Ginger root,and top growth that looks like vacant lot weeds anywhere USA-World.
Any guess?

Its Jeruselum artichoke. About as untropical as they get.

Interesting post. I was going to guess somewhere between Yacon and some Helianthus (which would include Jerusalem artichoke, Helianthus tuberosus). Was it a an unusual shape or color form of J.A.? I know they exist...

I'm curious, are there extraordinary produce markets in your part of the East Bay? Or does one have to go to Berkeley? I ask because I'm "just" over the San Mateo bridge from your part of the East Bay (San Carlos). With a couple minor exceptions, there's not much to compare to those in Berkeley. I admit I'm not familiar with what's between San Mateo and SF, more what's South of here.
