Guava-how do you know when it's ripe?

The guave I got today is green and not soft at all. How does one know when a guava is ripe? Will it ripen on your countertop? How is it eaten?

best tasting fruit is usually left on the tree until ripe , esp. with white guava is very fragrant , I can smell it from far away , very strong .. this var. usually is ready in the cooler months . your fruit may ripen

What size is your guava? Some are eaten harder and crunchier, while others are used primarily for juicing and tend to ripen to be much softer.

And as aroideana says, guavas when ripe are very fragrant. pungent. Personally I find it to be more overpowering than durian, but I might be the only one.
