Does 'white' pitaya require hand pollination for fruits?

I have very limited experience with pitaya (dragon fruit). Last year I had 6 flowers, I hand pollinated with a brush, got 2 fruits. This year, the plants are going crazy with flowers, at last count over 40 at various stages of development. There are more little buds about to become flowers. I've been real busy with some other stuff, and just left the dragon fruit flowers alone. At least 15 of the flowers bloomed and died, no fruits. I see many houses in Orange County (So Cal for non-Cali folks) with lots of dragon fruit with fruits. They have far more flowers than mine, and I just don't see how the owners can hand pollinate each flower, some growing real high up the trunks of other trees. What has been your experience? Are you able to get fruits without hand pollination?

Thanks,
