I'm interested in acquiring an avocado tree, the "Duke 7 variety", which is supposed to be the most cold hardy of the fruit. I'm in Zone 8a and would like to grow the tree here, but I'm wondering if I should overwinter it indoors to be safe.

My question is really, how exactly do I overwinter this tree? I don't have a ton of sunlight indoors, will this kill the plant somehow during the winter?

Can it tolerate a chilly basement and does it need watering during this period, or does it simply go dormant?
